Maths is taught using a mastery maths approach where children explore and investigate to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts through concrete mathematical equipment which helps them grasp new concepts and transfer skills into the abstract and problem solving. At EC St George's we use the 'Maths No Problem' scheme of work to ensure this is done systematically through spiralling knowledge and skills.

In addition, pupils access fluency lessons which support rapid recall of mathematical facts such as number bonds and times tables.

In Year 4 pupils are expected to know the times tables. The Government have introduced a times tables test to monitor this element of mathematical understanding. The document below will help parents understand the expectations related to these tests and support their child in learning their times tables.
